Luke's time at OLE Nepal has been nothing short of transformative. Since arriving in September 2007, he has played a crucial role in shaping the technical direction of our project, helping us navigate the challenge of rapidly developing engaging learning activities for children.
When Luke arrived, we were grappling with a key question: How can we create a lot of great learning activities quickly? While Python seemed like a logical choice, it proved too time-consuming for rapid graphical development. Luke introduced EToys as our primary tool, leveraging its intuitive visual programming interface and the full power of Smalltalk.
His decision was validated when OLPC's Walter Bender praised our EToys-based activities, and even educators from Birmingham, USA, expressed interest in using them. Thanks to Luke’s contributions, our team is now well-integrated into the global EToys and Squeak communities, collaborating with experts like Yoshiki Ohshima and Scott Wallace.
More Than Just a Brilliant Hacker
Luke isn't just a technical wizard—he's also a colorful character who left a lasting impression on our team and Kathmandu itself. Some of his legendary exploits include:
After nearly six months with us, Luke is off to Sweden to start a new career as a firmware hacker, inspired by his work with OLPC and the Forth programming language. His absence will be deeply felt—especially by Bujho, our OLE Nepal puppy.
Luke, you are always welcome back. Take care, brother, and best of luck in your new adventure!
