Yesterday, I had an opportunity to read an Academic Commentary by our Education Director, Dr. Saurav Dev Bhatta titled “Tackling the Problems of Quality and Disparity in Nepal’s School – Education: The OLPC Model.” While I had developed a relative comprehension of the OLE Nepal project, Dr. Bhatta’s article truly captured the project, providing the necessary context for it to make sense. The article is quite comprehensive, and while I highly recommend you read it in entirety, I will summarize a few key points below.

Before coming to Kathmandu, my knowledge of OLPC and the XO was limited to what I had read in the news. I really have learned much in the last three weeks. My first lesson was that OLPC is not an implementation organization. Don't get me wrong, the development and distribution of an affordable laptop is great. It's the XO that initially drew me to OLE Nepal, however, there is so much more to the OLPC model than the XO.

For those who aren’t familiar w/ it, redmine is a fantastic project management tool very similar to Trac but much, much more user-friendly and easier to set up. We wanted to use OLPC’s Trac set up but found it did not meet our needs.
